Pathways to Citizenship
This is deep, methodical, and often surprising work. I research whether your family line contains a viable pathway to citizenship in another country, identify the legal framework that governs your specific case, and gather the documents required to support an application.
One practical note worth knowing at the outset: the best time to do this research is before hiring an immigration attorney. Many clients find that by the time our work together concludes, they don't need one.
Discovery
The research begins with you and extends outward — to your parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and often generations beyond. Each country requires a different familial chain to establish eligibility, and I will map that chain precisely once we identify which countries hold promise for your line.
The discovery process encompasses identifying the family members who form your lineage and anchoring that line to the destination country's legal requirements; verifying that the ancestors found are genuinely yours; and building the evidentiary thread needed to support a citizenship claim — addresses, dates of birth, death, marriage, and divorce, draft and service records, census data, immigration history, naturalization records, and more.
Documentation
A citizenship application stands or falls on the quality of its documentation. I order the official records your application requires — birth, death, and marriage certificates form the foundation, supported by immigration and naturalization records, draft cards, and census data. If you were adopted, as I was, this process remains fully open to you. Sealed adoption records can be obtained, and I know exactly how to get them. If you prefer to handle the document-gathering yourself, I will provide precise links and instructions for ordering everything you need.
Law
Citizenship law is rarely simple. Most countries' eligibility criteria are built from layers of legislation and amendment spanning a century or more, each layer interacting with the ones before it. I provide a clear outline of the legal framework governing citizenship in the country you are seeking, and we construct your documentation to meet it — tying your specific line to the specific provisions under which your claim rests.
